Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Picture Scroll of Genji in Modern Style, 1858

Comments - Charming scene of Prince Genji watching as a beauty completes her morning toilette, her servant washing her back as she leans over a shallow lacquer tub of water. The young nobleman stands at right with his hand resting against the wall, smiling shyly as he looks down. At left, a young girl carries in a lacquer chest with combs on top, while the beauty beside her prepares a kimono for the young woman bathing. Attractively colored and detailed, with a delicate embossed pattern on the beauty's white kimono and burnishing on the black lacquer chest, basin, and pitcher, and the black obi.
