Selected Underworld Characters for the Six Poetic Immortals - Terrific actor portrait from a creative Toyokuni III series pairing kabuki rogues with the "Six Immortals" of Japanese waka poetry. These great designs feature a bold half-length figure set against a dark ground, with an inset shape containing a poem and different flowers framing the title cartouche. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this series in its collection. Beautifully colored and detailed, these terrific prints are a great choice for a kabuki or poetry enthusiast.

The Imitation Henjo: Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as Kumasaka Chohan - Terrific portrait of the Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as the notorious bandit Kumasaka Chohan, the 12th century leader of a gang of robbers. An outlaw priest, Kumasaka is shown glaring over his shoulder gripping a spear, his head swathed in a traditional monk's cowl. He wears a red kimono over a green patterned robe and armor. The poem appears in a circular yellow inset, which doubles as a softly glowing moon in the sky, and colorful leaves frame the title cartouche. A wonderful composition with the figure filling the page with his imposing frame.
