Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Black Bear, 1861

Series; Five Fabulous Actors

Black Bear, 1861 - Terrific kabuki portrait of a commoner wearing a fantastic kimono patterned with a black bear and a rushing waterfall. He looks over his shoulder with a grimace as he lefts up the hem of his robe with one hand, revealing a red under loincloth. His hair is short on top with longer locks pulled into a knot at the back of his head, and he has a blue and white towel draped over his shoulder. The beautifully detailed figure is nicely set off by a deep blue background. The first time we've seen this design.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at top and bottom edges from previous mounting. Horizontal creases. Wrinkling, slight soiling at edges, faint stains. Please see photos for details.
