Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
General Kanki and Kinshojo, 1850

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait from the play commonly known as "Kokusen'ya Gassen," set mainly in China. The beauty Kinshojo's half-brother, the Japanese warrior Watonai, has come to China to help restore the Ming Dynasty. He asks the beauty's aid in enlisting the help of her husband, General Kanki. Here, Kinshojo looks over her shoulder with a wary expression, her hair pulled back into a large bun with smaller loops tied in red ribbons over her shoulders. Kanki scowls angrily, gritting his teeth. He wears an elegant robe trimmed with rows of ruffles, and an ornate court cap. Beautiful detail in the clothing and accessories.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 7/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Stitching holes at side, slight thinning at edges, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
