Comments - Dramatic illustration of the Korean uprising of July 23, 1882, also known as the Imo Incident or the Korea Incident. Korean soldiers revolted, attacking the palace and government officials, along with the Japanese legation and military advisors. In the center, Japanese officers fight off the Koreans with swords. A general draws back his weapon to strike an attacker who has tumbled backwards onto the ground. At right, an archer on horseback prepares to fire an arrow at the Japanese as more Koreans rush forward into the fray. At left, a Japanese diplomat faces several attackers menacing him with swords and an axe. An elegant building rises in the center, with orange flames and smoke billowing into the night sky at right. A lively depiction of this historic event, with expressive figures and vivid color.
