Untitled series of The Tale of Genji - Handsome scene illustrating Murasaki's beloved novel, "The Tale of Genji." This attractive and rarely seen chuban size series was begun by Toyokuni III in 1852, but he only designed 30 prints, including more than one design for some chapters. His student, Kunisada II, completed the series in 1864. Each subject features portraits of beauties and noblemen, beautifully detailed with elegant fabrics and fine objects. Each design is bordered with a softly shaded cloud across the top, and has an allover embossed pattern in the background, which is scattered with confetti-like dots. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has many prints from this series in its collection.
