The Six Immortal Poets, 1880

Comments - Handsome triptych featuring kabuki actors as the famous Six Immortal Poets. In the center, Nakamura Sojuro I plays the Abbot Henjo, who holds a poem slip, while Ichikawa Sadanji I appears as Otomo no Kuronushi. He wears a black tunic with a beautiful burnished lozenge pattern and a tall black court cap. At right, the Heian era poet and courtier Ono no Komachi grins as she holds out a brush, a writing set in her other hand. A great bold design, with large expressive figures set against a deep red background and bordered with a simulated black lacquer frame. Includes additional burnishing in two of the court caps and the lacquer frame.
