Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, No. 49 - Fine portrait of the renowned warrior Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, who earned fame putting down rebels and thieves in the area of Omi around the capital. Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, came to his aid in fighting the rebels by sending a hail of arrows from a cloud, a scene shown in the inset above. Here the samurai kneels at the entrance to a rustic home in the mountains, wearing full armor and a black court cap. A beauty beckons him in, holding aside the rich draperies in the doorway. A handsome print with wonderful detail and rich color, including embossing on the beauty's under robe, and touches of burnishing.
