Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan - Yoshitoshi designed this fantastic series of fifty-one prints of military heroes from 1876 to 1882. These dramatic images of famous warriors created a sensation with the Japanese public. Ashikaga Yoshimitsu Admiring the Temple of the Golden Pavilion, 1879 - Handsome portrait of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu admiring the temple of the Golden Pavilion which he built in Kyoto. Yoshimitsu was the third Ashikaga shogun, and after ruling for more than 25 years, he ceded his position to his son and became a monk. He stands at the water's edge, a retainer kneeling beside him, looking at the splendid building covered in gold leaf and adorned with deep violet drapery. Lovely color in this attractive scene.
