Hachiro Tametomo in his Island Kingdom, 1849 - 1852

Comments - Terrific depiction of the great archer Minamoto no Tametomo (Hachiro Tametomo) on his islands kingdom. After the Hogen Rebellion, Tametomo was banished to Oshima Island. Here, he sits atop a rocky outcropping along the sea, scowling unhappily as he watches a native woman on a ladder plucking fruit from a tree. Several other women kneel respectfully before him. On the peak of the rock at left, two awabi divers pull a third diving girl from the crashing surf with a rope. She carries an abalone in one hand, her knife clenched between her teeth. A rarely seen, fascinating design with a striking natural setting and wonderful detail.

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 29 1/4"
