Tsuchiyama: Onoe Kikugoro III as Shirai Gompachi, 1855 - Dramatic image from the collaborative Hiroshige and Toyokuni III Tokaido Road series, referred to as "The Tokaido by Two Brushes." In the foreground, Toyokuni III depicts Onoe Kikugoro III as the robber and murderer Shirai Gompachi, escaping from an enclosed palanquin while being transported by police. Having cut through the netting with the knife now clenched between his teeth, he begins to emerge from his captivity, extending one foot and an elbow out of the palanquin. The fantastic landscape inset by Hiroshige shows Tsuchiyama at night during a driving rainstorm. Travelers make their way up a hill under the slanting raindrops as the river cascades down the hillside. A great print, beautifully detailed and finely shaded.
