Paper Model Sets - Fuji Arts is pleased to offer a terrific group of complete and uncut paper model sets. These entertaining 19th century prints were designed to be cut apart and formed into three-dimensional models. An inset cartouche provides an example of the finished scene once assembled. Using the scene as a guide, the model builder could cut out the different components of the scene from the prints and create the model. Sets usually include a variety of figures, accessories, and background elements, brightly colored and nicely detailed, with subjects ranging from kabuki plays to famous samurai battles.

Not many complete sets survive. Collectors are lucky to own a single print from a model set - a complete paper model scene is an almost unprecedented opportunity. Assassination of the Shogun Sanetomo Kabuki Paper Model Set, 1893 - Fantastic, four panel paper model set depicting a kabuki play based on the assassination of the Shogun Sanetomo at Tsurugaoka Shrine by his nephew, Kugyo (Minamoto no Yoshinari). According to accounts, Sanetome had been at the shrine for a ceremony in February 1219 and was just about to descend the stairs when Kugyo attacked him with his sword, decapitating him and pronouncing himself shogun. The scene shows the ruler descending the stairs from the shrine as retainers lead the way carrying flaming torches. Wearing a monk's cowl, the shogun's attacker kneels at the side of the pathway, waiting for the moment to strike. Includes an extensive setting featuring the temple and steps atop a stone base, snow-covered trees, and canvas tent walls emblazoned with the Minamoto paulownia crest. Beautifully detailed with a subtle burnished pattern in the black robes. A great uncut paper model set.
