Bird Kite and Yakko Dako Kite, 1862

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of the man Musubyoe riding atop an enormous bird kite, looking up over his shoulder as a yakko-dako or man kite follows him through the sky. Musubyoe shields his eyes with his hand, a worried expression on his face. The yakko or footman thrusts one hand out ahead of him, his legs kicking. A couple birds fly nearby, and the roof of a temple and blossoming cherry trees can be seen below. From left, the actors are Nakamura Tsurusuke IV and Ichikawa Ichizo III. A fascinating design.
