Twelfth Month: Watching a Play, 1889 - Lovely triptych depicting upper-class ladies enjoying a year-end theater performance at a daimyo's palace. The guest of honor sits on a cushion at far right, surrounded by her attendants who kneel along either side of the room. The actors perform on a low platform, enacting a scene featuring the wild woman Yamauba and her son Kintaro, along with a woodsman sitting on a bundle of brush. Wonderful detail in the elegant interior setting and fine kimono worn by the beauties, including delicate embossing on the white collars. A handsome design.
