Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Deceased Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, Ichikawa Kodanji IV, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, 1860

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the actors Ichikawa Kodanji IV and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I on stage making an announcement. The pair kneels respectfully, one looking up with a distraught expression. An inset at upper right depicts Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, who died in 1843, in character as Scarface Yosa. The text beneath the portrait mentions a mass for the dead, so the occasion may be a memorial service for the actor, but we are not sure. An interesting and unusual subject.

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 9 1/2"
