Moon Viewing, 1897 - Lovely Chikanobu triptych showing beauties enjoying an evening of moon viewing. Two beauties watch from the verandah at right, one holding the edge of a wooden pillar. She wears a deep blue kimono shaded to soft green at the hem, patterned with gourds and vines hanging from a trellis. Her hair is pulled back into a single loop, adorned with a floral hairpin. At far right, a young girl carries a black lacquer stand, pausing to look back over her shoulder. An enormous full moon glows low in the sky, the river below meandering through the countryside, with bush clover along the shore and the porch railing. An ornate lantern decorated with beaded tassels hangs from the eaves at right, next to a reed blind. A terrific subject with beautiful color and detail, including embossing on the white kimono trim and burnishing on the hair.
