Morita Kan'ya XIII as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, 1921 - Incredible portrait of the actor Morita Kan'ya XIII as Jean Valjean in the kabuki adaptation of "Les Miserables," performed in 1920 at the Yuraku Theater in Tokyo. He leans forward with a menacing expression, staring up from beneath furrowed brows as he reaches his hand forward. The figure is shadowed in gray against a dark background enlivened with swirling baren marks. A fantastic, memorable image that was featured in the groundbreaking 1930 shin-hanga exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art.
