Kaminari Shokuro, 1860

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Kaminari Shokuro, one of the famous five chivalrous men, otokodate or street knights who were actually a gang of thieves. He relaxes on a bench smoking a pipe, looking to the side with a wary expression, his brows slightly furrowed. His kimono is shaded from violet to pale pink to gray with a checked border of green floral motifs, worn over a red under robe. A towel is draped casually over one shoulder, and he is armed with a single sword and a shakuhachi flute, which could be used as a weapon if necessary. The curtains running across the top of the background are shaded from violet to red with a design of slips of writing. A great image, beautifully colored and printed.

Image Size - 14" x 10" + right margin as shown
