Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Puzzle Song, a Popular Parody, 1869

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene featuring Nakamura Shikan IV and Ichimura Kakitsu IV as two singers. The fellow in the center hands a woodblock print from a stack to the babysitter at left, who grins as she reaches for the image. She carries a child on her back, amusing her charge with a windmill while she interacts the men. The man at right wears an unusual peaked woven hat over a dotted cloth draped over his head. Ichimura Kakitsu IV appears as the beauty. Nice large expressive figures set off by a colorful yellow background with verses above. Also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
