Imperial Silkworm Raising, 1880

Comments - Handsome scene of members of the Imperial household raising silkworms. The Meiji Emperor sits in chair a bottom center, with the Empress standing behind him, looking down as a beauty uses chopsticks to move silkworm larvae about. At lower left, a beauty chops mulberry leaves to feed the silkworms while in the garden at upper left, women pick leaves from a mulberry tree. An interesting Meiji era look at the ancient art of sericulture, beautifully detailed with light embossing on the white kimono.
