Several prints feature comic illustrations, including the adventures and mishaps of Kita and Yaji, the bumbling travelers from the popular novel "Shank's Mare." Others include travelers in Western attire or distinctly modern Meiji subjects. These imaginative prints are beautifully detailed with attractive color and fine line work, and offer an interesting Meiji era take on the classic Tokaido subject. This interesting print features an array of folding fans, books, poem slips, and paintings, all spread out on a red mat on the floor, each covered with calligraphy. Brushes, an ink stone, and shallow dishes of pigment rest on the floor nearby, as if the artist has just finished working. Additional panels with text and small illustrations run across the top, including a railroad train and a view of Mt. Fuji. A charming design and a nice complement to this Tokaido series.
