Comments - Interesting triptych depicting the Battle of Aizu, which was part of the Boshin War of 1868 - 1869 between samurai loyal to the shogunate and Imperial troops. Aizu clan warriors are seen outside a fortress at right, including two women who are armed with swords and a naginata, as troops rush towards them at left, a red banner fluttering in the breeze. At right, a commander on horseback watches their approach, a retainer holding his mount's halter. A fascinating historical subject that we've never before seen in reprint.
