Nakamura Kanjaku as Asahi Marufuji, 1871

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of Nakamura Kanjaku as Asahi Marufuji, an otokodate or street knight. He stands with his back to the viewer to showcase his striking kimono design featuring the samurai Asahina, who met many strange people during his world travels. He stares ahead with bulging eyes, a pipe in the corner of his mouth and his arms folded across his chest and tucked into the sleeves of his kimono patterned with stylized crane motifs. Some of foreigners he met appear on the sleeve, including a fellow with exceptionally long arms. A title cartouche at upper right takes the form of a wooden notice board, framed by blossoming plum branches. A great image, beautifully colored and detailed.
