Man Playing a Flute, 1862 - Handsome kabuki portrait of a man playing the flute, looking up with a saucy grin as he plays a tune. His thinning hair is pulled back into a slender topknot, and he has a blue cloth wrapped about his neck. A fan-shaped inset features a panoramic view of a steep hill lined with buildings, with softly shaded clouds drifting across the scene. The figure is nicely set off by the blue background. A great design from this rarely seen series jointly designed by Toyokuni III and Hiroshige II.
