A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

The Quarrel over Reversed Oars, circa 1839 - 1841 - Interesting scene of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his retainers gathered at an encampment overlooking the ocean. Just prior to the naval Battle of Yashima in 1185, Kajiwara Kagetoki suggested that the ships be equipped with reversed oars to allow them to move backwards if needed. Yoshitsune reacted angrily, accusing Kajiwara of cowardice. At center right, Kajiwara lunges forward, slowly drawing his sword. Several samurai try to intervene, throwing their arms out to hold back the angry warriors. Each of the men is dressed in full armor, and the encampment is surrounded with cloth panels bearing the Minamoto family crest. Nicely detailed.
