by Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) and Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes
Futakawa, 1855 - Intriguing design from a Tokaido series jointly designed by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III between 1854 - 1857. Hiroshige created the landscape backgrounds while Toyokuni III designed the large figures in the foreground. In the foreground a woman berates a young beauty who has been picking spring herbs, screaming angrily and threatening her, her hand raised beneath her kimono sleeve. The women are dressed in identical blue colored kimono with white sleeves patterned with Genji symbols and feathery greens. The beauty cowers beneath her sleeves, a basket of greens on the ground before her. The landscape shows a beautiful view of a rocky hill topped with tall pine trees overlooking the ocean, with white sails dotting the water. Lovely shading in the water and sky. A fascinating image from this attractive series.
