Comments - Attractive scene of a beauty and two men enjoying a picnic under a blossoming plum tree at night. The subject is a parody of a famous scene of three warriors meeting in a peach orchard to sign a treaty in the historical tale "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms." The man at left plays a shamisen, looking up at the woman with a smile. She returns his gaze, carrying a small porcelain cup of sake on a purse wrapped with tissues. Her blue obi features a beautiful burnished pattern of swirling clouds. The fellow at right takes a toothpick from his mouth as he frowns unhappily. Each man has a small red lacquer tray with dishes of food at his side, while a larger tray between them holds a serving platter and an elegant black lacquer box. Candles burn on stands topped with glass globes, the red flames flickering in the evening breeze. A handsome subject with lovely color, fine wood grain impression in the background, and soft shading in the sky.
