Original Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 - 1949) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ducks and Full Moon

Tsuchiya Koitsu - After moving to Tokyo at age fifteen, Koitsu studied for many years with the woodblock artist Kobayashi Kiyochika. Known for his beautiful landscape prints with a dramatic use of light and shade, Koitsu was one of the leaders of the shin-hanga or new print movement in 20th century Japan.

Comments - Handsome view of two wild or mallard ducks descending for the evening, seeming to hover in midair above the reeds along the water's edge. A full moon glows softly yellow in the gray sky overhead. The touches of color in the bird's feathers and the moon provide an attractive contrast to the almost monochromatic setting. Nicely detailed.
