Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Woodblock Print Envelope with Chrysanthemums and Leaves

Comments - Attractive woodblock print envelope is decorated with a lovely autumn design of chrysanthemums and falling leaves above a flowing stream. The centers of the flowers and the veining of the leaves feature metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone. The long narrow format would be nicely suited to tanazku or poem slips, but we are not sure of the original use. A charming decorative item.
