Fuji Arts’ Winter Yoshitoshi Senso-e Exhibition

Heroes of Kagoshima, 1877 - Handsome group portrait depicting some of the heroes of the Satsuma Rebellion in Kagoshima. Saigo Takamori, the leader of the rebels, sits on a chair at top center, wearing a military uniform and plumed hat. The other men wear traditional robes or fine suits of armor, and one woman is shown at upper right in a yellow and black plaid kimono holding a naginata, a white sash tied around her forehead. Nicely detailed with vibrant color and expressive figures, with burnishing on some of the armor and caps. A handsome image from this historic conflict, each person carefully identified with a name cartouche, along with a list running across the top of the print.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 14" x 28 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - Finely printed with sharp, crisp detail. From a well preserved, almost untouched collection of Yoshitoshi senso-e. Not backed, three separate prints. Nice surface condition, smooth and not rubbed. Vertical fold in two panels. Small loss at edge, slight thinning at corner, repaired. Overall very good.
