Pride of the Empire: First Sunshine and Clouds, 1884

Comments - Fantastic kabuki triptych combining scenes from different plays. At upper left, Nakamura Sojuro I as Inuzuka Shino battles Ichikawa Sadanji as Inukai Genpachi atop the tiled roof. Below, a yakko-dako or man kite played by Nakamura Kangoro XII floats in the sky, looking down at a mustached man kneeling on a clouds. In the center, Onoe Kikugoro V appears as the evil cat witch, flying through the sky with her long hair and robes trailing after her. The right panel includes Onoe Kikugoro V as the Thunder God sitting atop a lavender cloud smoking a pipe, and Nakamura Shikan IV as the notorious robber Ishikawa Goemon, wearing a black robe over armor trimmed with fringe. An incredible image packed with lively characters in vibrant color. Only the second time we've seen this subject.
