Attacking the Beauty Otake (the Dainichi Buddha), 1864

Comments - Fascinating kabuki depiction of the manservant Kyusuke attacking the beauty Otake, who is actually the reincarnation of the Dainichi Buddha. She smiles sweetly at him as her narrow red sash forms a halo about her head and rays of light spread across the room, repulsing her attacker as he attempts to stab her with a large knife. Otake was the servant of the Sakuma family in Edo. At left, Yamazakiya Yogoro watches through a window, staring at the beauty suspiciously from the corner of his eyes. At right, the wholesale rice dealer Sakama Kan'emon scowls as he witnesses the miracle. The scene takes place in a kitchen, with a large jar of water and dipper, pails, and knifes arranged at left. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tossho as Yamazakiya Yogoro, Sawamura Tanosuke as Dainichi Otake, Nakamura Gentaro as the manservant Kyusuke, and Nakamura Shikan as the wholesale rice dealer Sakama Kan'emon. An intriguing subject and an early triptych by Kunichika.
