Comments - Fantastic illustration of the Battle of Kurikaradani in 1183 between the Minamoto and Taira clans. In the foreground, warriors on horseback strike at each other as they gallop across the battlefield. Other samurai on foot clash with swords and spears. A line of pink clouds separates the figures from a scene above. At upper right, Minamoto no Yoshinaka and his men tied flaming torches to the horns of oxen, with the crazed animals then stampeding into a division of Taira troops caught between mountain passes. Many Taira warriors were trampled or knocked onto the rocky cliffs below, while others became lost attempting to retreat, meeting their deaths at the hands of the waiting Minamoto samurai. A rushing waterfall cuts off escape at upper left. A terrific depiction of this legendary battle, with wonderful detail in the figures and setting.
