Fuji Arts’ Winter Yoshitoshi Senso-e Exhibition

The Surrender of the Rebels at Kagoshima, 1877 - Handsome triptych of the samurai rebels surrendering to Meiji Imperial troops at Kagoshima following their defeat in the Satsuma Rebellion. The rebels kneel at left with unhappy expressions as officers in dress uniforms look down at them with slightly distrustful expressions. A row of guards stands behind the rebels, keeping careful watch on them. Japanese flags flutter at right, with a purple tent wall emblazoned with the Meiji chrysanthemum crest stretched beneath the pine trees. A solemn image of the end of the rebellion, nicely detailed with vibrant color, expressive faces, and soft shading in the water and sky. Includes burnishing on the black jacket and shoes.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28 1/4"

Condition - Finely printed with sharp, crisp detail. From a well preserved, almost untouched collection of Yoshitoshi senso-e. Not backed, three separate prints. Nice surface condition, smooth and not rubbed. Overall very good.
