Fuji Arts’ Winter Yoshitoshi Senso-e Exhibition

A Chronicle of the War in Kagoshima in Satsuma Province, 1877 - Striking design featuring half-length portraits of seven of the rebel leaders during the Satsuma Rebellion. In the center, Saigo Takamori sits proudly wearing a black military uniform trimmed with gold braid and epaulets, and a hat featuring a paulownia symbols. He is surrounded by six of his generals, two of whom appear in armor while the rest wear Western style jackets. The fellow at upper left holds a gun with both hands. Purple draperies featuring the crest of the Satsuma clan frame the scene above. Beautifully detailed, with expressive faces and burnishing on the black jackets, the black hat, and the armor. The first time we've seen this Yoshitoshi triptych.
