A Chronicle of the Subjugation of Kagoshima: View of the Battle to and fro in Close Quarters at Kumamoto Castle, 1877 - Fantastic scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of rebel samurai fighting Imperial Japanese Army troops around Kumamoto Castle. A shell explodes at right, sending a burst of orange flames into the night sky, while clouds of smoke and dust billow across the battlefield. At bottom center, a soldier and rebel samurai are locked in combat as they grapple on the ground, each stabbing his opponent in the neck with his sword, blood spraying from the wounds. Just above to the right, a rebel falls backwards as a soldier fires a shot at him, with additional troops on foot and on horseback rushing ahead. At left, a samurai gallops into the fray on a brown horse, brandishing his sword. From the windows of the castle tower above, shots streak down on the attacking army. A dramatic triptych capturing the chaos of the battle, packed with energy and action. A fine subject for a collector interested in military history.
