Saigo Takamori and the Battle of Miyakonojo, 1877 - Terrific scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of Saigo Takamori and rebel samurai at the Battle of Miyakonojo. The bearded general stands in the center wearing a black uniform with fringed epaulets and braided trim, gripping his sword against his shoulder. All eyes are looking to the left, watching a shot from the enormous cannon behind them explode in a cloud of red and gray smoke. At right, a warrior in a purple floral kimono and black boots shades his eyes with his hand as he watches. Several oxen are gathered behind the gun carriage, and rugged mountains can be seen in the distance. A handsome design with lively color and wonderful detail, including burnishing on the black jackets and boots.
