The Rebel Insurrection in the Kagoshima Disturbance, 1877 - Terrific depiction of the rebel leader Saigo Takamori standing on the rugged coast at Kagoshima, rallying his men as they come under a naval attack. He wears a military uniform with a purple jacket trimmed with fringed epaulets, his white pants tucked into tall black leather boots. The samurai standing beside him shields his eyes with his left hand as he looks out to sea where a ship approaches, a gun in his right hand. Other troops stand beside a cannon at right, smoke billowing skywards from a fire nearby. The dramatic rocky shoreline and cresting waves create an eerie, almost surreal setting. A fantastic Yoshitoshi design from this historic conflict. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has this image in its collection.
