Ichikawa Danjuro VIII in Three Roles, 1855

Comments - Terrific kabuki print featuring portraits of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII in three roles. At upper right, the warrior Soga Goro Tokimune grimaces angrily. His unusual flared wig and red stage makeup give him a fearsome appearance. At left, the nobleman Ashikaga Jiro Mitsuuji returns his gaze with a sober expression, holding the sleeve of his fire robe to his chest. His hair is pulled back into a topknot tied with gray cord, the ends carefully parted to either side. At bottom, the commoner Ebizako no Ju looks up with a worried frown, dressed in a blue tie-dyed kimono with a dotted towel draped over his shoulders. Nice expressive faces and fine shading in the background. A handsome design.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 3/8" x 9 3/8"

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at edges from previous mounting. Toning, slight soiling, a few marks. Please see photos for details.
