Series; Songs of the Four Seasons

Winter Pleasures, 1853 - Beautiful scene inside a palace of a young nobleman putting the finishing touches on his outfit. He wears an elegant gray and white kimono patterned with phoenixes in flight and blossoms, over a pair of red pants, the long legs trailing beneath his feet. An attendant behind him helps adjust his robe. At right, a beauty carries in a tray decorated with a miniature pine and a plum, and a pair of cranes, all symbols of good fortune and longevity. At left, a princess kneels on a cushion, shyly holding her sleeve to her chin. A folding screen at the back of the room is decorated with woodblock prints of flowers, and the window out right looks onto a blossoming plum tree. A lovely design with beautiful detail in the fabrics and household furnishings, including embossing on the white areas of the nobleman's kimono.
