Scene from Matsu Icho Tsurukame Soga, 1853

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Scene from Matsu Icho Tsurukame Soga, 1853" featuring from left, Iwai Kumesaburo III as Kudo Kanaishimaru Suketsune, Kataoka Gado II as Kawazu Saburo Sukeyasu, and Bando Hikosaburo IV as Omi Kotoda Shigeie. At left, the young samurai Suketsune emerges from the bushes beside a stone marker holding a flaming torch aloft. In the center, Sukeyasu frowns with worry as he grips his bow with both hands. He is dressed for hunting wearing spotted deerskin chaps, with a traditional woven straw hat hanging from his waist, which appears to be pierced by an arrow. At right, Shigeie scowls angrily as stares at the young samurai. An atmospheric night scene with expressive figures, nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono at right.
