Angry Monk by Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Angry Monk

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of an angry monk lifting a wooden beam above his head, grimacing as he glares at the rogue Terukuni, who strikes a pose gripping an axe with an enormous head. The monk's robe hangs open at his chest, his ribcage visible through his emaciated frame. A beauty tumbles backwards onto the ground below, turning away in fright as she thrusts a cloth-wrapped parcel at him. A samurai watches at right, holding a bow with both hands as he rests his foot on the stone stairway. The black night sky adds to the drama of the setting. Nice expressive figures.
