Early Blossoms on the Plum Tree in the Garden, 1852

Comments - Handsome scene of Prince Genji and his companions relaxing in an interior on an early spring day. The young nobleman sits at left with his hand resting atop a go board, grinning as he looks up. The beauty in the center smiles at the woman at right, who holds open a book illustrated with woodblock prints, gesturing excitedly to her friends. A small girl at left carries an elegant lacquer box tied with a cord, while another beauty at right giggles into her kimono sleeve as she watches. Beyond the verandah railing, the garden is filled with blossoming plum trees. An attractive design, nicely detailed with burnished patterns on two of the kimono, and embossing on the white kimono trim.
