Comments - Terrific scene from the popular kabuki play "Kezori," based on a true story of smugglers. Here, the fierce pirate Kezori threatens the young merchant Soshichi, who has witnessed his gang smuggling. Swinging an enormous hatchet with a flame painted on the blade, Kezori wears an incredible, exotic robe patterned with a dragon, and his wild hair and beard are an unusual reddish brown. At right, the courtesan Kojoro, Soshichi's lover, hides behind her kimono sleeve. A fantastic, bold composition with great large figures and vibrant color. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Gonjuro, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Kawarazaki Kunitaro. A great illustration from this classic play with wonderful fine line work in the hairstyles.
