Battle between Firemen and Sumo Wrestlers as Shinmei Shrine in Shiba, 1886 - Fantastic scene of the fireman Kotengu Keisuke fighting the sumo wrestler Yotsuguruma Daihachi during a battle at the Shinmei Shrine in Shiba in 1805 following fundraising sumo match held there. Daihachi lifts a bamboo ladder above his head with both hands, using it as a weapon, his muscles bulging. His fringed sumo loincloth whips in the air around him as he lunges back on one leg. Keisuku faces him gripping a fireman's axe, drawing back for a blow. He wears a short, boldly patterned firemen's coat, his upper body tattoo of red blossoms visible on his arms and thighs. The fighting continues at left with another wrestler holding off a group of firemen from two different companies. A dynamic, energetic design based on this historic event, which became the subject of many kabuki plays. A great image and a rarely seen Yoshitoshi subject, enhanced with burnishing on the sword scabbard.
