The Nineteen Retainers of Yoshitsune - Fantastic triptych of the great Minamoto leader Yoshitsune with his nineteen loyal retainers traveling in his ship. The warrior monk Benkei stands in the prow gripping a naginata, a monk's mantle wrapped around his shoulders. Yoshitsune sits under the canopy at left, wearing a horned battle helmet topped with a dragon and clutching a fan. White-capped waves crash against side of the ship and the sail and draperies are emblazoned with the paulownia mon or crest of the Minamoto family. Wonderful detail in the expressive faces and the ornately decorated ship. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A terrific woodblock with excellent detail and a choice for a samurai enthusiast.
