The Great Battle between the Minamoto and the Taira in Northern Echizen Province, circa 1839 - 1841

Comments - Terrific illustration of battle in the countryside between the forces of Minamoto no Yoshinaka and the Taira in northern Echizen Province. At right, a warrior on a black horse charges ahead, gripping his sword above his head. In the center, his opponent gallops towards him holding his naginata above his head with both hands, a retainer bearing a fringed standard at his side. At left, another horseman knocks an enemy over while just above, a samurai sits on the chest of his fallen opponent. At center left, the woman warrior Hangaku, rides straight ahead into the naginata of a Taira samurai, ready to counter the blow with her own weapon. A lively scene, nicely detailed.
