Samurai Disguised as a Courtesan, 1854

Comments - Great kabuki scene featuring the courtesan Hanako in the center, looking up at three stars twinkling in the sky with a sly expression. Her sleeves tied back with a rope, she extends one hand in a strange gesture while hiding a knife or sword behind her back. Hanako is actually the samurai Yoshida Matsuwakamaru, who is in disguise to try to recover a missing family heirloom. Two men flank her, the fellow at left raising an iron truncheon while the man at right prepares to draw his sword. Blossoming cherry trees frame the night sky behind them. A beautiful design, nicely detailed.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 7/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. Stitching holes at one side of each panel, repaired. Slight soiling, a few light creases. Please see photos for details.
