View of Akashi Bay, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Beautiful scene of Prince Genji and his companions along the shore at Akashi Bay. The young nobleman pauses to chat with several diving girls, one kneeling at his feet holding a large basket of abalone. At left, a woman balances a wooden tub of fish on her head as another crouches next to a basket of clams. A tub resting on the ground holds fish and an octopus attempting to make an escape. A fantastic view of the ocean with waves lapping the shore and the white sails of shipping dotting the bay. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A beautiful triptych with an attractive setting. Includes embossing on the white kimono trim, and burnishing on the black collar and lining of Genji's coat, the black obi, and the black kimono collars.
