Okabe: The Ivy Way through Mt. Utsu, 1854 - Terrific collaborative design from "The Tokaido by Two Brushes" series. In the foreground, Toyokuni III depicts a samurai striking a bold pose, his feet firmly spread apart, holding a flowering cherry branch with an attached poem slip in his extended hand. He tilts his head down with a scowl, looking suspiciously out of the corners of his eyes. He wears a red and yellow geometric patterned vest of a fine suit of armor and a brocade kimono and pants. His thick hair is tied into a bushy upright topknot, and a white sash is fastened around his forehead. The classic Hiroshige landscape above shows snow falling over mountains and valleys dotted with pine trees against a gray winter sky. Beautiful wood grain impression in the sky. A striking design from this series with wonderful detail and fine bokashi shading.
